Module 1: Foundations for Teaching English Language Learners with Technology

Connections

Connections can help to engage students in classroom tasks. Of the three types of connections mentioned here, the personal connection is the most important. Whether the teacher makes the connection for the students or supports the students to make them for themselves, the important thing is that it is made. Teachers can use versions of the statements below to introduce tasks and lessons.

Format

Academic Connection: “Yesterday we…and today we’ll continue/follow up by…”

Instructional Connection: "I know that you like to work in groups, so for this project..."

Personal Connection: “This makes a difference in your life/ connects to your life outside of class in this way…”

Examples

"Yesterday we learned about present simple tense. Today we are going to learn another important tense, present continuous. You each get to tell your own story, which I know you like to do. Once you know these two tenses well, you'll be able to say many things in English."
