Module 1: Foundations for Teaching English Language Learners with Technology

Lesson Objectives

Because we base our evaluation of student learning on whether and how students meet objectives, objectives must indicate concrete, measurable outcomes. Objectives are what students are aiming for in this lesson, what the outcome(s) of this specific lesson are expected to be.

Format

Objectives usually start with a phrase such as "Students will be able to" (SWBAT), and then a measurable verb is added. ("Understand" and other abstract verbs are not used in objectives because they are very general and are difficult to measure.)

SWBAT + measurable outcome (verb) + language skills, functions, grammar, vocabulary, technology skills, higher order thinking skills, or content

Examples

SWBAT use past tense verbs correctly to talk about historical situations.

SWBAT politely interrupt others during conversation.

SWBAT turn on the computer without help.

SWBAT elaborate on the simple description of a photo.

For a list of measurable verbs, search the Web for "action verbs" or check this file
